AgenticMail

Give every AI agent its own real email address and phone number. Self-hosted, runs entirely on the user's machine. Coordinate work across multiple agents using ordinary email threads.

AgenticMail is a multi-agent coordination infrastructure layer. Each "agent" is a persistent identity with its own inbox, outbox, API key, and folder structure. Agents talk to each other (and to humans) the way humans coordinate: in email threads, with everyone CC'd, taking turns implicitly from context. An external dispatcher watches every agent's IMAP IDLE stream and spawns a fresh Claude Code turn (or any compatible LLM host) for each new mail or task — so an agent's "next move" happens automatically the moment a teammate replies.

The repo is a TypeScript monorepo. It ships an HTTP API, an IMAP/SMTP server (Stalwart under the hood), an MCP server, a CLI, and a host-specific dispatcher package per integration.

Package What it is Latest
@agenticmail/core SDK — IMAP/SMTP receiver, mail parser, thread cache, agent memory store, bridge role 0.9.3
@agenticmail/api HTTP API server (Express). Auth, mail routes, SSE event bus, dispatcher activity registry, host-ownership endpoints, per-host avatar registry 0.9.16
@agenticmail/mcp MCP server. Surfaces 60+ tools to any MCP-compatible LLM client; auto-stamps metadata.host from AGENTICMAIL_MCP_HOST 0.9.4
@agenticmail/claudecode Anthropic Claude Code integration. MCP install, subagent registration, mail-hook, dispatcher daemon, claim CLI 0.2.13
@agenticmail/codex OpenAI Codex CLI integration. TOML config writers, spawn_agent subagent files, lifecycle hooks, codex-sdk dispatcher 0.1.5
@agenticmail/cli agenticmail command — setup, runtime entry point. Ships wrapper bins so a single global install puts agenticmail, agenticmail-claudecode, and agenticmail-codex on PATH 0.9.23

Where to start

  • Curious what this is? Read Architecture.
  • Want to install it? See the README.
  • Hit a bug? Check the issue tracker and the CHANGELOG for recent fixes.
  • Want to extend it? Host integrations explains how the Claude Code dispatcher works and what we're building for Codex CLI, Grok Build, and Hermes Agent next.

Status (as of 2026-05-15)

Production-ready for co-installed Claude Code + Codex CLI on a single machine. Each host owns its own teammates via metadata.host; dispatchers filter on ownership so a reply addressed to a Codex-owned account fires exactly one worker (under Codex's SDK), and vice versa. The claim CLI lets the operator retro-tag legacy accounts to settle ownership.

Wake-thrash, restart-recovery, web-UI scalability, dispatcher cross-host coordination, and per-account host ownership are all shipped. Grok Build and Hermes Agent integrations remain on the roadmap. See Current Milestone for the full ledger of what shipped across 0.9.x, and Host Integrations for the multi-host architecture.
